At the heart of Kansas City’s social innovation ecosystem is Social Venture Studio (SVS) a four-month accelerator program tailored to help founders build sustainable, impact-driven businesses. Designed to meet entrepreneurs where they are, SVS supports ventures that are improving communities while building scalable business models.

What sets SVS apart is not just its mission, but the powerful coalition behind it. SVS is powered by LaunchKC, an initiative of the Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City (EDCKC), in collaboration with the Downtown Council of Kansas City, and operated through the Keystone Innovation District. Together, this public-private partnership is turning Kansas City into a national destination for social entrepreneurship.

The Origin of a Movement

The vision for SVS was sparked in 2022 when Kevin McGinnis, Father Justin Mathews, Jim Erickson, and Drew Eanes recognized a critical gap in the support landscape: entrepreneurs trying to create impact weren’t finding accelerators tailored to their needs. Within months, with seed funding from the Sunderland Foundation, SVS launched its first cohort—moving from idea to implementation in record time.

Kevin McGinnis, CEO at Keystone Innovation District

From the beginning, EDCKC’s leadership through LaunchKC helped ground the program in citywide economic development strategy while ensuring resources reached mission-driven businesses that don’t always fit the mold of traditional accelerators.

“EDCKC had the opportunity to catalyze the creation of SVS by pulling in a great idea, funding, and a program management team to execute on this opportunity. We are at our best when we convene talented partners,” said Jim Erickson, Director of Strategic Initiatives at EDCKC

This collaborative foundation allowed SVS to rethink what an accelerator could be—focusing on impact, sustainability, and community-first entrepreneurship rather than solely traditional venture-backed models.

“We wanted a program that redefined what an accelerator could be,” Kevin shared. “Not every impact-driven business fits the traditional venture-backed model but that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve support.”

EDCKC’s Role in Scaling Impact

“We’ve been intentional about positioning Kansas City as a destination for social entrepreneurs,” said Tracey Lewis, President and CEO of the EDCKC. “Thanks to the efforts of EDCKC and LaunchKC, we’re now seeing applicants from across the country eager to be part of our community.” That growing national recognition came to life when SVS received the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) award for Excellence in Economic Development, placing Kansas City firmly on the map as a social innovation hub.

Through LaunchKC, EDCKC plays a central role in shaping SVS—providing not only funding and infrastructure, but also a citywide platform to elevate the program and its participants. The support goes beyond grants: it’s about building Kansas City’s identity as a national leader in inclusive, community-centered entrepreneurship.

A New Kind of Support System

SVS doesn’t rely on a cookie-cutter curriculum. Instead, founders receive customized mentorship, unrestricted grants, coworking space at Keystone CoLAB, and technical support across finance, legal, marketing, and operations.

At the core of the program is intentionality. Each participant’s needs are assessed early on, and resources are curated to fit. Whether it’s matching a founder with a CFO, helping a team refine its pitch, or offering individualized coaching on leadership, SVS meets entrepreneurs where they are.

“Entrepreneurship can be lonely,” Kevin said. “This program builds fellowship—and that might be the most valuable resource we offer.”

That sense of community and connection is reinforced by EDCKC’s broader mission—to create economic opportunity for all Kansas Citians, including those building businesses rooted in purpose and equity.

Real Impact, Real Results

The stories coming out of SVS speak volumes. Max Kaniger of Canby’s Market, who considered stepping away from his venture, rediscovered his leadership path through SVS. Others, like Natasha with PROSPERITY, accessed critical funding tools like New Market Tax Credits through SVS connections. Cohort members have gone on to collaborate, co-locate, and build ecosystems around shared missions—particularly in areas like food systems, affordable housing, and sustainability.

“SVS helps Kansas City businesses create sustainable social impact models while also being job creators and economic engines for KC,” said Jim Erickson.

When SVS companies scale, their impact scales too creating a ripple effect of innovation and opportunity across Kansas City.

“When our companies scale, their impact scales with them,” Kevin explained. “That’s the model we’re building.”

What’s Next for SVS and How You Can Help

The goal? Build an entire industry cluster around social entrepreneurship—and make Kansas City the place where mission-driven businesses come to grow.

Looking ahead, SVS is expanding. In addition to the annual accelerator cohort, the team has launched a monthly Social Venture Meetup, with plans to create an incubator and other year-round programming to support a broader range of founders.

“It can’t just be about one program or seven companies a year,” Kevin said. “We’re building something much bigger than that.”

And EDCKC remains a driving force in that effort—helping grow the pipeline of social entrepreneurs, attract national attention, and build partnerships that sustain innovation over time.

Join the Movement

Kevin had one clear message for the broader community:

“Support your local entrepreneurs—not just with words, but with your skills, your networks, your resources. Whether you’re a CFO, a marketer, or a business development pro, your expertise can make a huge difference.”

Social Venture Studio is helping Kansas City redefine what economic development looks like proving that “doing well by doing good” isn’t just possible, it’s the future. With EDCKC’s continued leadership and a growing community of mission-driven entrepreneurs, Kansas City is building an economy where impact and opportunity thrive hand in hand.
